O Captain, My Captain

March 7, 2017

In most walks of life, captains, or more leaders, are imperative to success. Whether you’re looking at Admiral Nelson leading the Victory to…victory against Napoleon, or Steve Jobs steering the good ship Apple to the top of the technological market, these people were the key driving force behind the success.

Leadership is not a journey to rise in the ranks. It is a journey to help those around us rise.

Great leadership is a very rare and unique quality that cannot be learned…it’s a natural born instinct to galvanise those around you and encouraging them to be the best that they can.

Ok, you’re probably thinking, Woah, this is going deeeeeeep. Fear not, we’ve hit a plateau.

A question you often hear dotted around the world of sport is:

So just how important is *** to your team and what elements do they bring to the team that ensures the whole team rally behind them? ‘

The answer is often imperative – just like the vital importance of Nelson and Steve Jobs.

Think of the great rugby captains of late:

  • -       Richie Mccaw
  • -       Sergio Parisse
  • -       Brian O’Driscoll
  • -       Martin Johnson
  • -       Agustin Pichot

All wonderfully gifted rugby players but also, all leaders of men.

It got us thinking; what are the other key traits of an effective and inspirational captain?

They lead by example...

These guys ensure that they’re pushing the most in the gym, tackling the hardest in training, running the hardest on the pitch – they lead by example and inspire those around them to try and reach their levels of commitment to the team.

They constantly encourage their teammates…

They know their personal strengths but spend time on respecting, encouraging and developing their teammates so that the team as a whole performs better and reaches it’s full potential.  Inflate rather than deflate.

They care…

Every great captain brings a palpable sense of passion to the team. They care about the end result, not because they want the plaudits but because they want the team to win! Watch highlights of any of the above mentioned captains – they play until the final whistle for their team!

They need to win…

Do you know what it’s like to have the desire to win written in your DNA? Every great captain does, and they’ll do whatever it takes to ensure their team tastes victory. Their determination is unparalleled and their desire is unmatched…first into training, last out
