So many people think that fitness has to cost you the world but actually there is a whole world of free fitness out there.
To be the best we can be, we know the importance of not only continuing training even when the season is over but also cross-training. This not only prevents your fitness levels from depleting but makes you a better athlete. As you many of you pay memberships to be part of your grassroots team it is important to know that other forms of fitness out there won’t cost you anything, thus giving you the chance to improve your fitness levels at no extra charge...and who wouldn't want that?
What is Free Fitness?
It's a topic I'm very passionate, so much so, I've written a book about it and at my events the most common question I get asked is “What is free fitness?” Well the answer is, it can be a whole host of things. You can engage in any style of exercise for free. It’s just about taking time to find the group that suits you. And no, when I talk about free fitness I do not mean staying inside doing YouTube tutorials on your own. I’m talking about getting out in your community and working out with others.
Put Away Your Wallet
Many people think that getting fit is paying a massive monthly membership fee, going to a gym, putting your headphones in, jumping on a treadmill and talking to no-one. This is not how it has to be.
I used to think like this and would feel instant dread when someone mentioned working out. But I have discovered that it is so much more than that. It doesn’t have to be a solo activity that you resent doing just so you can order pizza for dinner. Instead it can become part of your social life without draining your bank account. You do not have to miss out on fitness and fun when you are not training with your team.
Free fitness is in every city around the world you just have to change where you look for it. It ranges in styles, intensity and form. Here are a few examples of what you might be able to find in your town;
- Movements – These are grassroots fitness groups that have been started by volunteers with the sole aim of providing fun fitness for free. The leaders in this area are November Project and Project Awesome, both of which meet in cities across the globe and provide workouts that are a little bit of everything and like nothing you have ever done before.
- Running Groups – You do not have to run alone. There are free running groups in almost every city in the world. If you aren’t sure where to start take a look at Parkrun which organizes free 5k runs every Saturday morning.
- Store Sponsored Workouts – Many sports shops such as Nike and Lululemon provide free workouts every week instore. They don’t cost anything and you don’t even have to buy anything from the shop, all you have to do is show up. Next time you are in your favorite sports shop ask about workouts they provide.
- First Class For Free – Many workout, yoga and spin studios allow you to have your first class for free. It’s worth looking around and seeing what you can try. Even if you tried something new each month, that would mean you had twelve free classes in the year and you might find a workout that you love.
Broadening Your Horizons
Now some of you may be sitting there thinking “this doesn’t sound like something for me." Well you’re wrong, free fitness is for everyone and because it is free you get the chance to meet people from all walks for life. People you may never have met otherwise. You also get to try styles of training you may never have tried before.
The fitness movement I went to in the states had players from the Boston Bruins ice hockey team as regulars in the group. They were big fans of free fitness. It allowed them find new exercises they could bring back to their team and to workout with people who spoke about something other than ice hockey. As many of you will know, sometimes we get stuck in our sports bubble and realise that we only talk about one thing. Sometimes it’s good to broaden your horizons.
As you may have noticed with my other posts I like to give you all a challenge at the end. So this week, why not take five minutes to see what free fitness there is in your town, get together some of your teammates and see what all the hype is about. If nothing else, it may give you a head-start at pre-season!
