Tackle pyramid for the front 5

December 14, 2016

This is a rugby related fitness session that is great as a top-up at the end of your normal club session. This session is especially good for your front 5 forwards, as it is very related to your game. Anything like this with a high contact rate compared to running will stand you in good stead for the weekend.

This is a toughie but give it a go.

What you need

  • One tackle bag, one friend and a fresh set of lungs!

Instructions

  1. To start put the tackle bag in between the 50m line and the 10m line
  2. Start on the 50m line opposite the bag
  3. Perform a down up, sprint towards and tackle the bag
  4. Get up and run through to the 10m line where you will perform a down up facing the way you came
  5. Sprint towards and tackle the bag (that your partner re-set)
  6. Get up and finish on the 50m line

That is 1 rep! Do it as fast as you can!

Session:

  • x1 rep – partner does x1 rep
  • x2 reps – partner does x2 reps
  • x3 reps – partner does x3 reps
  • x4 reps – partner does x4 reps
  • x4 reps – partner does x4 reps
  • x3 reps – partner does x3 reps
  • x2 reps – partner does x2 reps
  • x1 rep – partner does x1 rep

These training tips are great but could I suggest that as a head coach of the local rugby club junior section, working with willing volunteers with a 'huge' range of rugby experience the inclusion of simple diagrams of set up etc would really enhance the drill description. Love the site!
