Beccehamians back to winning ways

Beccehamians 36 Old Williamsonians 7

At last Beccs got their first win of 2019. The pitch was good and for a change there was virtually no wind at Sparrows Den.

Beccs started well and secured early possession. When the ball was moved to the left wing George Lipka was tackled and the OW’s full back came in high. The ref awarded a penalty try and yellow carded the OW’s full back. The incident caused a great deal of discussion with the OW’s supporters.

Beccs continued to dominate possession and field position. Eventually after some inter-passing amongst the forwards George Tossell scored a try but Jordan missed the conversion 12-0.

Although Beccs lineout was faltering we continued to dominate possession and turned over the OWs possession frequently.

From a scrum in the middle of the pitch Ryan broke to the right and the ball was passed out to Sam Hodges on the right wing. He passed the ball inside to Mary who scored atry but Jordan again missed the conversion 17-0.

Jordan missed a penalty from in front of the posts and from the drop out OW’s moved up field. OW’s were awarded a penalty which they kicked to within 5 metres of our line and this was about the only time they were in our 22 all of the first half. From the resulting lineout Ryan leapt like a salmon and tapped the ball back to Brooksie who kicked it out.

We could not have hoped for a better start to the second half. Within minutes the ball was passed along the line from a scrum and Jordan made a break in the centre. He passed the ball to Pat who scored the try with his first touch of the ball. Alex was given kicking duties and converted the try 24-0.

Beccs continued to dominate possession and position and eventually Paul scored a try which Alex converted to make it 31-0.

We had kept the pressure on OW’s for most of the game but they made a break from just in their half and Tom Bishop scored the try which Richard Pearce converted to reduce our lead to 21-7.

There was still time for Sam Hodges to score a try but Alex missed the conversion.

Altogether it was a fine display by Beccs.
