Beccs were triumphant in a keenly contested game against league leaders Crowborough on Saturday.
Within two minutes Sam Edwards scored a try for Beccs in the right hand
corner but Alex failed to convert.
Crowborough then got their hands on the ball and Bertie Boast finished off a
backs movement by scoring under the posts. The try was converted to give
Crowborough the lead at 7-5.
Beccs managed to establish territorial advantage and after running a few
penalties eventually resorted to Alex kick a penalty to get the lead back 7-8.
By this time both Beccs wings had been injured and been replaced.
Replacement wing Freddie Buckle was late tackled when kicking ahead from
our half. Alex’s attempt at the resultant penalty bounced back off the upright.
Beccs were not finished and eventually Callum Buckler managed to score atry
which Alex failed to convert to make the score 7-13.
From the resultant kick off Crowborough enjoyed possession in our half and
were awarded a series of penalties.
Eventually a driving lineout was pulled down and the ref awarded
Crowborough a penalty try to regain the lead 14-13. The offending forward
Delia was yellow carded.
The kick off allowed Beccs to gain possession in the Crowborough half and
eventually gain another penalty which Alex kicked to give us a 2 point lead.
On the cusp of half time Beccs were awarded another penalty which Alex the
boot kicked to make the score 14-19 at half time.
Beccs started the second half by camping in the Crowborough half. Eventually
Callum Buckler capitalised on a mistake at the base of a Crowborough and
darted over for his second try. Alex converted to give us a lead of 14-26.
Crowborough were far from finished and had the better of the next 15 minutes
and were awarded a number of penalties in Beccs half.
Freddie Buckle’s attempted one handed interception 3 metres from our line
was deemed a deliberate knock on by the ref and everyone else. This resulted
in another penalty try for Crowborough and Freddie was banished to the
naughty step for 10 minutes. Our lead was cut to 5 points.
Beccs again managed to gain possession in the Crowborough half but when
Crowborough were awarded a penalty Foggy prevented them taking it quickly.
As a result he was banished to the naughty step for the rest of the game.
This resulted in some bizarre Beccs scrums with loose head prop George
cropping up as hooker, No 8 and flanker in successive scrums.
Freddie came on for the last few minutes and Beccs were awarded a penalty
for hands in the ruck by a Crowborough forward. Up stepped Alex the boot to
attempt the penalty kick. There were some Beccs spectators (me included) who
thought it was out of his range but he proved the doubters wrong with a
magnificent kick to make the score 21-29.
Crowborough had enough time left to mount another attack but the Beccs
defence was solid.
